[Asia Economy reporters Lee Ji-eun and Kwon Hyun-ji] The ruling Democratic Party submitted a 'Recommendation for the Resignation of Speaker Kim Jin-pyo' on the 30th, following its unilateral passage of a motion to dismiss Foreign Minister Park Jin on the 29th, escalating to a 'strong confrontation' with the ruling party.
Song Eon-seok, the senior deputy floor leader, submitted the recommendation for Speaker Kim Jin-pyo's resignation to the National Assembly's legislative affairs office that morning and told reporters, "We strongly protested the unilateral forced processing of the motion to dismiss Minister Park, which was not originally on the agenda but was handled by changing the agenda at yesterday's plenary session."
He explained the reason for submitting the resignation recommendation, saying, "The intention was to ask the Speaker to lead the National Assembly neutrally without bias toward any particular party or faction, but yesterday Speaker Kim agreed to change the agenda unilaterally without proper consultation with our People Power Party regarding the Democratic Party's motion to dismiss Minister Park, directly contradicting the National Assembly Act's principle of neutrality."
Senior Deputy Floor Leader Song said, "By convention, on days when there are speeches by negotiation group leaders, contentious issues have never been put on the agenda even once. However, the Speaker did not mediate until the end on a highly contentious issue between the ruling and opposition parties and allowed the motion to dismiss to be tabled as the Democratic Party wished. Our party believes the Speaker is unable to properly perform his duties and thus submitted a resolution urging his resignation."
