Sunchon National University Hosts the 4th Foreigners' Korean Writing Contest


[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Suncheon National University (President Ko Young-jin) announced that it will hold the "4th Suncheon National University Foreigners' Hangeul Writing Contest" at 3 PM on October 7th (Friday) at the Suncheon National University 70th Anniversary Hall in celebration of the 576th Hangeul Day.


The Foreigners' Hangeul Writing Contest is held annually with the support of Suncheon City to encourage proper use of the Korean language among foreigners residing in the local communities of Suncheon, Yeosu, Gwangyang, and to widely promote the excellence and beauty of Hangeul.


The contest theme will be revealed on the day of the event. It is open to everyone and divided into student and general divisions. The participation format is split into poetry and essay categories, and a total of 24 winning works will be selected.


Foreign participants selected as outstanding works through judging will receive a total prize of 6 million KRW from the Suncheon National University President's Award: 2 grand prizes of 700,000 KRW each, 4 excellence awards of 500,000 KRW each, 4 merit awards of 300,000 KRW each, and 14 encouragement awards of 100,000 KRW each.


Additionally, side events for participants and their families or friends will include a Hangeul Day commemorative film screening, an exhibition showcasing beautiful handwritten works, a fortress exhibition at the Suncheon National University Museum, VR experiences, and various attractions for visitors attending the event.


The application deadline is October 5th (Wednesday), and applications can be submitted through the Suncheon National University International Exchange and Education Headquarters website.


Cheon Ji-yeon, head of the International Exchange and Education Headquarters at Suncheon National University, said, "This event will provide a platform for international students and foreigners in the local community to showcase and improve their Korean language skills. The accompanying historical and cultural films and exhibitions will also offer visitors a meaningful opportunity to deeply appreciate the significance of Hangeul Day."
