HJ Heavy Industries conducted a 'plocking' campaign in Yeongdo, Busan. While 'plogging' involves picking up trash while jogging, plocking is volunteering while taking a walk. It is a type of environmental cleanup activity where participants keep a sharp eye to thoroughly scan and pick up even small pieces of trash that might be missed while running.
On the 29th, HJ Heavy Industries held an event to collect trash from Jungni Beach in Yeongdo, a typhoon-affected area, along with the new concept environmental protection activity called plocking around Bongrae Mountain in Yeongdo-gu, Busan.
Founded in 1937 as Korea's first steel shipyard, HJ Heavy Industries is celebrating its 85th anniversary this year and continues its shipbuilding business in its birthplace, Yeongdo, Busan.
The company organized this event with the intention of raising awareness about the importance of clean nature and protecting the natural and ecological environment of Yeongdo, which is called the treasure of Busan.
Plocking is a compound word combining the Swedish word 'Plocka upp,' meaning 'to pick up,' and the English word 'Walking.' It is an environmental protection activity that attracts attention by collecting trash while walking or strolling, taking care of both health and nature simultaneously.
On this day, the plocking campaign started at Bongrae Mountain in Yeongdo-gu, where HJ Heavy Industries' headquarters is located and which boasts beautiful natural scenery, and proceeded along the forest trails and coastline encompassing Jungni Beach.
Jungni Beach was suffering from a large amount of marine debris washed ashore due to Typhoon Hinnamnor, which struck Busan earlier this month.
About 200 executives and employees who participated in the event focused on collecting various marine debris such as vinyl, plastic, discarded fishing gear, and styrofoam brought by the typhoon at Jungni Beach in Yeongdo and carried out environmental cleanup activities to tidy up the beach area.
They also climbed Bongrae Mountain, collecting trash along the hiking trails and surrounding paths and removing broken vegetation.
An HJ Heavy Industries official said, "It was a meaningful time for employees to take care of their health and raise awareness about the environment by collecting trash around Bongrae Mountain and Jungni Beach, where marine debris flowed in due to the typhoon. We plan to engage in various campaigns that can contribute to the local community."
Along with the plocking event, HJ Heavy Industries also held a 2022 order and safety prayer ceremony, reaffirming their commitment to achieving management goals and ensuring a zero-accident, zero-injury workplace.
