[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] On the 29th, as the ruling and opposition parties failed to find common ground over the motion to dismiss Foreign Minister Park Jin, National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo called the floor leaders and deputy floor leaders of both parties and requested their agreement by 2 p.m.
Joo Ho-young, floor leader of the People Power Party, came out of the Speaker's office and told reporters, "Speaker Kim said he hopes for an agreement between the ruling and opposition parties by 2 p.m."
The opposition party stated that they intend to forcibly pass the motion to dismiss Minister Park during the plenary session that day. Floor leader Joo said, "We are in a situation where we cannot agree," adding, "I requested Speaker Kim to strongly prevent unilateral proceedings without bipartisan agreement, as this is the first regular session of the second half of the 21st National Assembly, and such unilateral action would lead to a parliamentary deadlock and trample parliamentary democracy."
Park Hong-geun, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said, "We have proposed the motion to dismiss, and earlier during the plenary session, we obtained consent to change the agenda to bring it up as an item," adding, "Therefore, according to the procedures stipulated by the National Assembly Act, we strongly requested the Speaker to promptly process the motion to dismiss today."
Earlier, Speaker Kim declared a recess after the speech by Chung Jin-seok, emergency committee chairman of the People Power Party, saying, "Please agree on the agenda related to the processing of the motion to dismiss Minister Park."
