Changnyeong-gun "When planting garlic and onions, be sure to disinfect seed bulbs"

Request for Dedicated Seed Disinfection Agent Application and More for High-Quality Agricultural Produce Production

Changnyeong-gun "When planting garlic and onions, be sure to disinfect seed bulbs" Garlic seedling from Changnyeong Mountain, Gyeongnam.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Wook] Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, has urged caution for the production of high-quality agricultural products as the optimal planting season for garlic and onions approaches.

The optimal planting period for garlic is from late September to mid-October. Seed garlic should be selected and prepared at about 200 kg per 10a, and before planting, it should be soaked in a mixed solution of fungicide and insecticide for 30 to 60 minutes, then naturally ventilated in the shade before sowing.

Due to the characteristics of paddy garlic, which is mostly double-cropped, both black rot sclerotium disease and wilt disease are problematic, so seed bulbs must be disinfected before planting to prevent various pests and diseases.

Onions are transplanted from seedlings when the true leaves number 2 to 3, thinning them at 1 cm intervals, and the main planting is done from late October to early November. When transplanting, plant upright and provide sufficient water to induce root establishment, and it is recommended to spray a dedicated pesticide immediately after sowing to prevent neck rot and downy mildew.

A county official said, “We urge farmers to plant garlic and onions, representative agricultural products of Changnyeong, at the right time for safe overwintering and high-quality production. We will continue to promote cultivation technology education and on-site guidance for farmers.”

Changnyeong-gun, known as the largest garlic production area nationwide, has a garlic cultivation area and production volume of 2,914 hectares and 302,000 tons, accounting for 12% and 18% of the national share, respectively.
