[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwiyeol] On the 28th, Gyeongbuk Province held a groundbreaking ceremony at Mangyangjeong in Uljin to successfully promote and secure momentum for the ‘East-West Trail’ connecting the east and west of the Korean Peninsula.
The East-West Trail is a forest path crossing the Korean Peninsula, spanning 849 km across five metropolitan cities and provinces from Uljin, Gyeongbuk to Taean, Chungnam.
The Gyeongbuk section is 275 km long, accounting for 32% of the entire trail, making it the longest section among the target cities and provinces, passing through six cities and counties including Uljin and continuing to Chungbuk.
The ceremony was attended by the head of the Korea Forest Service, the deputy governor of Gyeongbuk Province, the mayor of Uljin County, the chairman of Woori Financial Group investing ESG funds, as well as key figures, related organizations, and residents of Uljin County, marking the start of the East-West Trail development.
Mangyangjeong, where the groundbreaking ceremony was held, is the starting point of the entire East-West Trail and is the foremost among the eight scenic spots of Gwandong where the sun rises.
It carries the hope of becoming a symbol of hope for Uljin, which has been depressed due to large-scale forest fire damage this spring.
Kang Seong-jo, deputy governor of the province, said, “It is very valuable that a major route of the East-West Trail is being established in Gyeongbuk, a treasure trove of forest resources such as the Geumgang Pine forest and with beautiful scenery,” adding, “We expect it to become a national forest healing destination as well as revitalize the local economy.”
