[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] On the 27th, the Nam-gu Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City adopted the “Resolution Urging the Abandonment of the Yoon Seok-yeol Government’s Policy to Reduce Public Senior Job Programs,” which was proposed by Nam-gu Councilor Oh Young-soon, at the 2nd plenary session of the 1st regular meeting of the 288th session.
Through the resolution, the councilors pointed out that “due to the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s budget cuts in 2023, about 60,000 ‘public interest activity-type senior jobs’ have been reduced, threatening the livelihoods of low-income elderly people who are struggling to make ends meet.”
They also emphasized that “among senior job programs, the ‘private-type senior jobs’ are indeed burdensome in terms of time and intensity for the elderly aged 70 and above compared to ‘public-type senior jobs,’ and if only ‘private-type jobs’ are increased, opportunities for seniors to work will disappear.”
Accordingly, the Nam-gu Council expressed concern over the reduction of public-type jobs through the resolution, urged the government to abandon its policy of reducing public senior job programs, and called for a restructuring of job programs to ensure the continuous provision of public-type jobs for elderly people who find it difficult to gain employment.
