Haenam-gun Hosts '2022 Uldolmok Festa Embracing the Light of Myeongnyang'

Myth of 13vs133: Mingnyang Naval Battle Festival September 30 - October 2

[Haenam=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that the 13 vs. 133 Myeongnyang Battle myth and Myeongnyang Battle Festival will open on the 30th under the theme of ‘2022 Uldolmok Festa Myeongnyang, Embracing the Light.’

The Myeongnyang Battle Festival, co-hosted by Jeollanam-do, Haenam-gun, and Jindo-gun and organized by the Myeongnyang Battle Memorial Foundation, is held every autumn to commemorate the miraculous great victory of the Myeongnyang Battle during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592?1598), where 13 ships defeated 133 Japanese warships, and to honor Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s patriotic spirit.

Especially this year, after three years due to COVID-19, the face-to-face event will be resumed, and the festival will be operated with abundant nighttime attractions such as a night opening ceremony to attract tourists who stay overnight.

The opening event will be held from 6 p.m. on the first day, the 30th, at the Jindo Victory Stage, featuring the opening ceremony, send-off ceremony, congratulatory performances, and drone and fireworks shows.

In particular, the naval battle reenactment event, which had been held annually on the Uldolmok sea, will be recreated as a media naval battle using a large screen during the send-off ceremony. The drone formation and drone fireworks show with about 300 drones, combined with the screen showing the Uldolmok site, are expected to splendidly recreate the victory of the Myeongnyang Battle.

After the send-off ceremony, a congratulatory performance by the world-renowned K-pop band, Inalchi Band, and a story-filled fireworks show will follow.

Until the 2nd of next month, various attractions such as the On-gyeore Ganggangsullae Festival Contest, National Youth Song Festival, Myeongnyang Trot Celebration Show, and Navy Military Band Autumn Concert will be prepared at Haenam-gun’s Useuyeong tourist site and Jindo-gun’s Nokjin tourist site during the festival period.

Along with these, diverse experiential events such as the Myeongnyang Children’s Playground, Naval Soldier Play Experience, Joseon Market Street Experience, and Naval Reconstruction Stamp Rally will be held.

A shuttle bus (from in front of Chungnam Sanghoe to Nokjin Police Substation) will operate between Haenam and Jindo to assist tourists crossing the Jindo Bridge.

The Myeongnyang Marine Cable Car, which crosses the sky between Haenam Useuyeong and Jindo Nokjin, will offer a 3,000 KRW discount on admission fees and extend operation until 9 p.m. during the festival period to allow more tourists to use the cable car.

Myunghyeon-gwan, Haenam County Governor, said, “The Myeongnyang Battle Festival is a differentiated festival where people can feel the tradition of historical culture as well as the joy of the festival, providing great inspiration to many.” He added, “I hope this will be a time to fully experience the true essence of the autumn festival at Haenam Useuyeong, held for the first time in three years.”
