[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The Korea Arts Council (hereinafter Arts Council) announced on the 27th that the Korea Pavilion at the Venice Biennale has recorded a cumulative audience of over 300,000 visitors.

According to the Arts Council, since the Korea Pavilion at the Venice Biennale began operations on April 23, more than 300,000 visitors, including art industry professionals and opinion leaders from various fields, have visited.

In particular, the Korea Pavilion exhibition received praise from global art media, with Art Newspaper selecting it as a "Must-See National Pavilion Exhibition," Artnet naming it one of the "Best 9 Pavilions," and Artsy ranking it among the "Best 10 National Pavilions." Major overseas media such as The Guardian, Bloomberg, the French-German art broadcaster ARTE TV, and Kunstforum also gave significant coverage to the Korea Pavilion.

Kim Yooncheol’s installation "Chroma," displayed at the Korea Pavilion, won the Honorary Award at Ars Electronica, the world’s largest media art festival, in June. Following invitations to Montreal, Canada; London, UK; Naples, Italy; and Geneva, Switzerland, Kim Yooncheol’s works are expected to be showcased in various countries.

The Arts Council also held unique events. On the 6th, in collaboration with official sponsor Hyundai Motor Company, the "Hyundai Art Node: Venice Biennale Korea Pavilion" featured two programs, TransMatter and 접지 (Jeopji), which captivated local audiences.

On the 6th, a dialogue themed "TransMatter" was held between media archaeologist Siegfried Zielinski and Kim Yooncheol, the representative artist of the Korea Pavilion. The two had shared philosophical discourse and exhibition insights through email correspondence, which they developed into a deep and engaging conversation under the theme "TransMatter."

On the 8th, in commemoration of the 90th anniversary of Nam June Paik’s birth, a performance he once conducted was paid homage to. Nam June Paik participated as an artist in the German Pavilion at the 1993 Venice Biennale, winning the Golden Lion Award. This milestone helped him advocate for the necessity of the "Korea Pavilion" both domestically and internationally, significantly contributing to the establishment of the Korea Pavilion as the last national pavilion.

Kim Yooncheol performed a piano piece titled "Small Gyre by the Seaside," inspired by the exhibition theme "Gyre" and the Roscoe paintings of the same name, as well as "C-ray," a performance using seawater from Venice. Alongside performer Ahn Wi, a performance involving silver mirrors and other elements was held to interact with the artwork. The "Gyre" exhibition will continue until November 27.

The 59th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale 2022 Korea Pavilion exhibition "Gyre" will run until November 27. The video of "Hyundai Art Node: Venice Biennale Korea Pavilion" will be sequentially released starting next month on YouTube channels Hyundai Art Lab and the Arts Council.
