Jeju Island and Assemblyman Song Jae-ho to Play Role as 'Tourism Capital' by Attracting Tourism Agency to Korea's Top Tourist Destination Jeju
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced on the 27th that it held a meeting on the 26th at 5 p.m. at the National Assembly, co-hosted with National Assembly member Song Jae-ho (Jeju-si Gap), to establish and promote strategies for the creation and attraction of a Tourism Agency in Jeju.
As the government is reportedly reviewing amendments to the Government Organization Act, including the establishment of a Tourism Agency, Jeju Province is seeking countermeasures together with local lawmakers and the tourism industry.
Jeju Province has repeatedly proposed the attraction of the Tourism Agency to Jeju by visiting related organizations such as the Presidential Transition Committee, the National Assembly, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
At the Jeju Tourism Society Summer Academic Seminar on July 12, a consensus was formed through a discussion on the establishment of a Tourism Agency to strengthen Jeju's global city brand value.
Lawmaker Song Jae-ho plans to submit a bill to amend the Government Organization Act regarding the establishment of a Tourism Agency, which will be responsible for fostering the tourism industry and revitalizing local tourism, based on the opinions presented at the meeting.
Kim Ae-sook, Director of the Jeju Tourism Bureau, said, “We will continuously monitor the progress of the Government Organization Act amendment and persuade related ministries such as the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, as well as the National Assembly, to ensure that the Tourism Agency is attracted to Jeju.”
Lawmaker Song Jae-ho, co-host of the meeting, emphasized, “The establishment of a dedicated agency, the Tourism Agency, and the attraction of Jeju, which holds a leading symbolic significance in domestic tourism, are very important for the revival of the tourism industry, which was stagnant due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting with this meeting, all related organizations must cooperate organically.”
