[Asia Economy reporters Lee Ji-eun and Geum Bo-ryeong] Sung Il-jong, chairman of the Policy Committee of the People Power Party, proposed a "TV debate on the Grain Management Act" to the Democratic Party of Korea, which unilaterally submitted the Grain Management Act.
On the morning of the 27th, at the National Assembly's preliminary inspection meeting for the national audit, Chairman Sung said, "Let's have a debate on which party seriously approaches the lives of farmers and the people."
He pointed out, "Despite taking the largest-ever measure to purchase 450,000 tons of rice, the Democratic Party is trying to forcibly pass the amendment to the Grain Management Act by unilaterally submitting it," adding, "One cannot help but ask who the Democratic Party's Grain Management Act is for."
Chairman Sung stated, "If they care so much about farmers, why didn't they handle the Grain Management Act during the Moon Jae-in administration? In 2020, during a famine year, the market was short of 100,000 tons of rice, but the Moon administration released 300,000 tons of government stockpiled rice, causing rice prices to fall," criticizing the previous administration's mistakes.
He also said that the 'Rice Alternative Crop System,' abolished by the Moon administration two years ago, was a major cause of the rice price collapse, and pointed out, "At the very least, market intervention should be used to regulate supply and demand while ensuring a decent livelihood for farmers."
