Recently, interest in people with developmental disabilities has increased due to the drama "Extraordinary Attorney Woo," which gained syndromic popularity on TV. However, in reality, employment education and hiring opportunities for people with disabilities are fewer than those for non-disabled people.

Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) announced that it will operate practical ICT education such as computer coding and virtual reality (VR) to cultivate customized professional manpower for people with developmental disabilities in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The education content includes coding methods, which are the basics of computer programming, virtual reality (VR, AR), and platform production using the metaverse, conducted at the 'Seocho Lifelong Education Center for People with Developmental Disabilities' located in Bangbae-dong.

The target is adults aged 19 or older with developmental disabilities who have basic computer skills, with two classes totaling 12 people, and a total of 11 lectures will be held until November.

The reason for this education is based on survey results (the '2021 Survey on the Status of People with Developmental Disabilities' announced by the Ministry of Health and Welfare) showing that computer use accounts for the second largest portion of leisure activities for people with developmental disabilities. Accordingly, this education was prepared to help those interested and proficient in computer use to find employment in computer-related industries.

Meanwhile, the district operates six 'Neulbom Cafes' where people with disabilities work as baristas and the nation's first disability vocational training convenience store, 'GS Neulbom Store,' employing about 20 people with disabilities to provide employment opportunities and support independence.

Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, said, "The 4th industrial era can be an era of opportunity to strengthen the capabilities of people with disabilities," adding, "We will spare no support in nurturing digital talents with customized ICT education for people with developmental disabilities."

With a super-aged society, an increase in elderly living alone, and the era of non-face-to-face interactions, the proportion of seniors living in senior centers is gradually increasing.

Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) supports the 'Gwanak-type Smart Senior Center Service,' which systematically provides various services such as health, education, counseling, and leisure to eliminate the digital information gap among seniors.

The 'Smart Senior Center' project aims to make senior centers convenient and happy spaces through IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence)-based smart services.

The district was finally selected in the '2022-2023 Living Field Smart City Pilot Project Autonomous District Contest' hosted by Seoul City, investing a total of 700 million KRW to complete system construction at 10 senior centers in the region this year and will begin pilot operation from next year.

Through facial scanning, it automatically measures body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, stress, etc., and provides personalized exercise programs. It also establishes a smart healthcare system including issuing health diagnosis reports, medication reminders, smartphone guardian guidance, AI body shape analysis, and customized exercise provision.

A hands-on program is introduced where seniors can practice ordering through kiosk voice guidance just like in restaurants and movie theaters, helping them overcome difficulties and fears related to non-face-to-face food ordering and ticket booking.

A two-way real-time video conferencing system is established to provide digital leisure programs such as online yoga, mill exercise, singing classes, and laughter therapy, involving multiple senior centers to create lively and enjoyable senior centers.

In particular, through living lab operations with companies possessing smart technology and residents, the service will carefully apply senior-friendly digital design to ensure that seniors with an average age of over 80 have no inconvenience using the smart senior center service, and directly reflect the opinions of senior center seniors in building the service.

Meanwhile, the district is promoting three pilot smart city services closely related to residents' lives in safety and welfare for socially vulnerable groups, including the 'Beacon-based Missing Prevention Smart Keeper' and 'Autonomous Patrol Robot Service,' in addition to the 'Smart Senior Center Project.'

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, "We established the smart senior center service to provide health and leisure culture services for seniors using new technologies," adding, "Through the smart senior center service, we plan to naturally eliminate seniors' digital resistance in their living spaces and make senior centers a happy resting place full of vitality for seniors."
