[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who returned from a tour of Gulf oil-producing countries, tested positive for COVID-19 on the 26th (local time).

Steffen Hebestreit, spokesperson for the German government, stated that "Chancellor Scholz tested positive in a COVID-19 diagnostic test this morning" and "he has mild cold symptoms and has immediately entered isolation."

Scholz toured Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Qatar from the 24th to the 25th. During this tour, Scholz signed a multi-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply contract with the UAE to reduce energy dependence on Russia, which invaded Ukraine.

Spokesperson Hebestreit said, "All of Chancellor Scholz's public schedules this week are canceled," and that he will participate via video in the meeting with the 16 state premiers scheduled for the 28th.
