[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] The police have re-applied for an arrest warrant for a man in his 40s who threatened a teenage female student living in an apartment with a weapon and attempted to kidnap her.
The Gyeonggi Goyang Police Station applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A (42) on the morning of the 26th on charges including attempted abduction for the purpose of molestation, violation of the Sexual Violence Punishment Act, and violation of the Youth Protection Act.
Mr. A is accused of threatening a teenage girl, Ms. B, with a weapon in an elevator at an apartment in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province, on the evening of the 7th, attempting to kidnap her. CCTV footage at the scene showed Mr. A grabbing Ms. B as she was getting off the elevator, forcing her back in, and trying to take her cellphone while holding a weapon.
Mr. A fled when he encountered other residents but was caught by police who arrived at the scene after a report. The police applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A on the 9th, but the court dismissed it the same day, stating there was no risk of him fleeing or threatening or harming the victim again.
There was criticism of the court's judgment at the time. It was argued that the victim could not help but feel anxious since Mr. A lives in the same apartment. In response, the victim’s father went around the apartment collecting petitions from residents. The Korean Women Lawyers Association also issued a statement on the 14th expressing deep regret over the court’s failure to carefully consider the seriousness of the crime and the victim’s situation, despite the female teenager being victimized by an attempted kidnapping in her own apartment.
Meanwhile, through forensic analysis of Mr. A’s cellphone, the police additionally confirmed that he had been illegally filming women outdoors and storing sexually exploitative materials, which was reflected in the warrant application.
