[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seocho-gu (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) announced that the 'District Unit Planning Area and Plan Decision (Draft) for the area around 1342 Seocho-dong' was approved with modifications at the Seoul Metropolitan City Urban and Architectural Joint Committee held on the 23rd.
The main contents of the approved district unit plan include ▲inducing complex development through the establishment of special planning possible zones (5 locations) along major streets (Gangnam-daero and Hyoryeong-ro 72-gil) ▲introduction of street activation uses along Hyoryeong-ro ▲road widening to improve traffic flow in the back streets ▲improvement of pedestrian space through designation of building setback lines.
The district unit planning area around 1342 Seocho-dong (82,031㎡) is included in the Gangnam downtown area, one of the three major downtowns in the '2030 Seoul Urban Basic Plan.' It is a transportation hub where various transportation modes (Shinbundang Line, metropolitan and city buses, etc.) connect the metropolitan area. However, the surrounding area is surrounded by apartments and has been underdeveloped with low-rise, low-density development forms, so there has been a continuous demand for the establishment of urban management plans for balanced regional development.
The district has been in consultation with Seoul City for many years since 2011 to prepare a rational land use plan, and after promoting the district unit plan establishment project in 2016, it has borne fruit after six years.
Through this district unit plan decision, it is expected to solve long-standing residents' wishes such as improving the residential environment in the back streets and transform the area between Gangnam Station and Yangjae Station into a regional economic center faithfully performing neighborhood commercial functions.
Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, said, “Through this district management plan decision, the first since the launch of the 8th elected government, we hope it will serve as a cornerstone for composing a new urban model connecting the east-west living zones of Seocho in conjunction with the undergrounding project of the Gyeongbu Expressway.”
Jung-gu (Mayor Kim Gil-seong) announced that it has completed the Seonggwak Village Yard creation project and restored the landscape of the Dasan Seonggwak-gil section of the Hanyangdoseong (Seoul City Wall).
The district demolished three unauthorized buildings blocking the Seonggwak-gil near 432-1916 Dasan-dong (in front of Dasan Seonggwak Library) and an adjacent old small park, completed landscaping work, and opened it to residents on the 6th.
This construction has fully connected the Seonggwak-gil, which is evaluated as revitalizing the lifeline of the Hanyangdoseong.
During the creation of the Seonggwak Village Yard, the district continuously communicated with residents. It held resident briefings for those living near the Seonggwak-gil and conducted preference surveys to reflect residents' opinions as much as possible by installing fitness equipment, rest facilities, and convenience facilities.
The Seonggwak Village Yard is divided into a viewpoint rest area, Seonggwak rest area, and lawn yard. The viewpoint rest area has benches installed on a wooden deck floor to comfortably enjoy the view of the Seonggwak-gil, with trees planted to provide shade. From the sitting wall of the Seonggwak rest area, one can see a garden decorated with trees and flowers. It is a 'prime spot' where you can also enjoy the view of the Dasan Seonggwak-gil and the village scenery along the Hanyangdoseong.
The lawn yard at the lower part is used as a resting space for residents and a venue for various events. Starting with the book festival hosted by the Jung-gu Cultural Foundation on October 15, it is expected to play a key role as a base for the Seonggwak art and culture street.
Through this construction, the Maru small park located at the upper part of the village yard was also renovated. Responding to residents' requests to replace the old facilities, benches and chairs were placed under the shade of trees for comfortable rest and conversation, and new fitness equipment was installed.
On September 23, Kim Gil-seong, Mayor of Jung-gu, who took a site tour of the Seonggwak Village Yard, said, “I hope a street where people gather and culture and arts bloom will be created where the village yard and library meet on the Hanyangdoseong path.”
