60s Woman Arrested for Killing Sister Over Forcing Daughter into Shamanism... Court Cites "Flight Risk"

[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] A man in his 60s has been arrested by the police on suspicion of assaulting his older sister to death because she pressured his daughter to become a shaman.

Judge Koo Ja-kwang of the Seoul Eastern District Court held a pre-trial detention hearing on the 25th for Mr. A, a man in his 60s accused of murder, and issued an arrest warrant at the police's request, citing "risk of flight." Before the hearing, Mr. A appeared in court and only said "I'm sorry" to reporters, refusing to answer questions about admitting guilt or the motive for the crime.

Mr. A is suspected of assaulting his shaman sister with a blunt object around midnight on the 23rd at his home in Gangdong-gu, Seoul, causing her to die from excessive bleeding. On the same day at 9:53 a.m., he directly reported to 119 that "the victim is not breathing." Around 10 a.m., police who were requested to respond jointly arrived at the scene and urgently arrested Mr. A.

The police judged Mr. A's crime to be serious and applied for an arrest warrant the day before, which the prosecution accepted and submitted to the court. During earlier police investigations, Mr. A reportedly said, "I got angry and had a fight because the shaman victim pressured my daughter to become a shaman as well."
