[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Juri] Canadian child actor Ryan Grandham has been sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering his biological mother.
According to foreign media including the BBC on the 22nd (local time), a judge at the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver sentenced Grandham to life imprisonment on charges of second-degree murder. In British Columbia, second-degree murder carries no eligibility for parole for 10 to 25 years.
In March 2020, Grandham surrendered to the police after shooting the back of the head of his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Weight, who was playing the piano at their home north of Vancouver.
Grandham was initially charged with first-degree murder and was detained for two and a half years. He was later sentenced to second-degree murder, losing his eligibility for parole for 14 years.
It was revealed that Grandham recorded a video of his mother’s corpse at the time of the incident. He also attempted to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and planned to carry out a shooting spree at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, where he was enrolled, and at the Lions Gate Bridge.
During the trial, Grandham said, “It is meaningless to apologize in the face of such a horrific event. I am sorry for my existence and everything.”
Meanwhile, Ryan Grandham, born in 1998, appeared in films such as Becoming Redwood (2012), Barricade (2012), Way of the Wicked (2014), and Alaska Quake (2015), and also appeared in the Netflix drama Riverdale.
