[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Police Agency announced on the 25th that it has launched the operation of the 3rd Digital Forensics Advisory Committee by appointing 20 experts as members.

The advisory committee is composed of external experts such as professors, researchers from national research institutes, and lawyers. Divided into technical and legal/human rights fields, they are tasked with providing opinions to the police on ways to ensure fairness and reliability in digital evidence analysis procedures. During their two-year term, they will offer advice related to human rights protection in digital forensics, review laws, conduct research projects, provide technical consultations, and deliver special lectures. The police plan to utilize external academic research outcomes and related expertise to establish systems and policies, and to explore the development direction of police digital forensics.

The digital forensics advisory committee system was implemented in 2018 to ensure the reliability and fairness of forensic evidence analysis. The 1st committee consisted of 94 experts, including local police branch subcommittee members, and conducted a total of 45 advisory activities such as revisions to the "Rules on the Handling of Evidence." In 2020, the 2nd committee was streamlined to 20 members and operated solely with National Police Agency members. It conducted a total of 24 advisory activities, including legal reviews of analysts' courtroom testimonies.
