[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] The foreign ministers of the United States and China met in New York. The U.S. side emphasized that maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is very important for global security and prosperity. While stressing that the U.S. policy toward China regarding the so-called 'One China' remains unchanged, they also urged China to cease military actions.

According to the State Department, U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken held a diplomatic meeting with Wang Yi, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on the 23rd (local time). The focus of the meeting was Taiwan. At this meeting, Secretary Blinken mentioned that the U.S. has been striving to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait in accordance with the long-standing 'One China' policy.

A State Department spokesperson stated, "Secretary Blinken mentioned the need to maintain open lines of communication between the U.S. and China and to responsibly manage bilateral relations, especially during times of tension." Additionally, Secretary Blinken confirmed the U.S. position of being open to cooperation with China where interests intersect.

Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden declared in a broadcast on the 18th that the U.S. would militarily intervene if China attacked Taiwan, which China immediately opposed. However, in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly on the 21st, President Biden emphasized that he would "maintain the 'One China policy'" and "preserve peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait."

On this day, Secretary Blinken once again condemned Russia's invasion of Ukraine and warned that there would be consequences if China supported Russia. A State Department official stated, "Secretary Blinken mentioned that the U.S. and China have an obligation to respond to Russia's invasion and to prevent further provocative actions."
