[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] On the 23rd, the prosecution extended the temporary release period of former President Lee Myung-bak by three months.
The Suwon District Prosecutors' Office held a parole review committee meeting in the afternoon and accepted the former president's application for an extension of the parole suspension. Earlier, on the 16th of this month, the former president's side applied for an extension of the parole suspension at the Anyang branch of the Suwon District Prosecutors' Office due to "health reasons." Our Criminal Procedure Act stipulates seven reasons for suspension of imprisonment, including ▲ when the execution of the sentence significantly harms health or poses a risk to life ▲ when the person is 70 years or older ▲ when the person is more than six months pregnant ▲ when there is no one to protect elderly direct ascendants or young direct descendants.
The former president was sentenced to 17 years in prison and fined 13 billion won for charges including receiving large bribes from Samsung Group and embezzling company funds. He was temporarily released on parole suspension on June 28, after serving one year and seven months. It is known that the former president is currently receiving outpatient treatment at his residence in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.
