Gwangju Fringe Festival to Conclude with 'Street Art Performances' in the Square

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced that from the 24th of this month to the 22nd of next month, the 2022 Gwangju Fringe Festival ‘Minju Square Fringe’ will be held five times at the 5·18 Minju Square and the National Asia Culture Center area.

The 2022 Fringe Festival is being conducted in two ways: ‘Our Neighborhood Fringe,’ which visits each autonomous district, and ‘Minju Square Fringe,’ held around the 5·18 Minju Square.

Starting from June 4th at the 5·18 Minju Square, ‘Our Neighborhood Fringe,’ conducted in cooperation with villages, concluded its 10th event on September 3rd.

Now, returning to the square, it plans to showcase the accumulated achievements from ‘Our Neighborhood Fringe’ along with richer and more splendid street art performances, marking the grand finale of this year’s Gwangju Fringe Festival.

At ‘Minju Square Fringe,’ each event features large-scale thematic performances, invited performances by top domestic street art groups, excellent local performances, and various side events such as art play, experiences, and art markets, offering diverse programs for audiences to watch and enjoy together.

At the first event on the 24th, centered on the thematic performance ‘From Village to Square’ by a 150-member citizen pungmul group, audiences will be greeted by performances from excellent domestic street art teams, including the circus ‘Force,’ which tells the story of three men defying gravity within a vertical structure, fire plays, installation theater, and mime.

From October 1st to 3rd, various genres of performances are prepared, including slackwire circus by ‘64J (Yuksipsajul),’ contemporary dance by ‘On & Off Dance Company,’ magic by ‘231 Show,’ as well as pantomime and yeonhui street theater.

Especially during this period, the festival can be enjoyed even more intensely in connection with the Gwangju Media Art Festival.

On October 22nd, the last day of the deepening autumn street art festival will be filled with emotion and joy through DJing dance performances by the Gwangju Dance Union team, circuses by ‘Bong & Jul’ and ‘Code Seshi,’ and traditional action yeonhui plays by ‘Balgwang Entertainment.’

Kim Yoseong, Director of the City’s Culture and Sports Office, said, “This year’s Gwangju Fringe Festival, under the slogan ‘Citizens, dyed in love for art,’ has been prepared as a festival where everyone can enjoy various genres of performances throughout Gwangju,” adding, “We thank everyone for the support given to each village during the summer, and now we hope you join us at the square for a more diverse street art festival on cool autumn days.”
