[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Jeong Chan-min, a member of the People Power Party (Yongin-si Gap), who was indicted on charges of accepting bribes worth about 300 million KRW through a third party by providing convenience in permits to a real estate development company during his tenure as mayor of Yongin, was sentenced to imprisonment in the first trial, resulting in the loss of his parliamentary seat and was taken into custody in court.

The Criminal Division 12 of Suwon District Court (Chief Judge Hwang In-seong) sentenced Jeong, who was indicted on charges including bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, to 7 years in prison and a fine of 500 million KRW on the 22nd.

Our Public Official Election Act and National Assembly Act stipulate that a member of the National Assembly who is sentenced to imprisonment or higher loses the right to be elected and must relinquish their parliamentary seat.

Jeong was indicted on charges of providing convenience in permits to Mr. A, who was developing a townhouse in Bora-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin-si, from April 2016 to February 2017 during his tenure as mayor of Yongin, in exchange for allowing a third party, including his elder brother and a friend, to acquire four land parcels within the project site at about 296 million KRW below market price. It was also investigated that he received bribes worth about 350 million KRW in total, including 56 million KRW in land acquisition and registration taxes paid on his behalf by Mr. A.
