[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On the afternoon of the 21st, Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District Office, took a commemorative photo with recipients of social welfare merit awards at the ‘Yeongdeungpo District Social Welfare Conference’ held in the annex auditorium of the district office.

Hosted by the Yeongdeungpo District Social Welfare Council, this event was organized to commemorate the 23rd Social Welfare Day by discovering and awarding individuals who contributed to the development of local welfare, thereby boosting the morale of social welfare workers and fostering communication and harmony among them.

Mayor Choi Ho-kwon presented certificates of commendation to the meritorious individuals and expressed his gratitude in a congratulatory speech, saying, “I deeply thank the social welfare merit awardees who have silently devoted themselves on the front lines of welfare, becoming hope and happiness for neighbors in need.” He added, “Yeongdeungpo District will also become a strong shield protecting residents and devote all efforts to enhancing local welfare.”

Geumcheon District (Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon) awarded certificates of commendation to 25 social welfare meritorious persons who have worked hard to promote community welfare on the 21st, marking the 23rd Social Welfare Day.

The district received recommendations for 11 ‘social welfare institution workers’ who serve as role models with a strong sense of mission and dedicated service to protect the rights of marginalized groups such as the elderly, disabled, and infants, from the Geumcheon District Community Security Council (co-chairs Lim Dong-chae).

Additionally, 10 ‘general citizen commendation recipients’ were selected from among the members of the Geumcheon District Dong Welfare Council, formed in May 2016 and currently active, based on recommendations from the heads of each Dong community center. These members have devoted themselves to discovering welfare blind spots and developing local welfare.

Furthermore, certificates were awarded to a total of 25 people, including 4 ‘social welfare dedicated public officials’ working at the district office and Dong community centers to improve welfare for local residents.

Social Welfare Day is a statutory commemorative day established by the government to enhance public understanding of social welfare projects and encourage the activities of social welfare workers. It is observed annually on September 7th, and this year marks the 23rd anniversary.

Mayor Yoo Sung-hoon of Geumcheon District said, “We want to encourage exemplary social welfare meritorious persons who are devoted on the front lines of social welfare,” adding, “We will continue to make greater efforts to improve the treatment of social welfare workers who strive to ensure that residents can enjoy a warm and happy city, Geumcheon.”

First, he visited the training control room and listened to the 4th Battalion Commander of the 213th Regiment about the status of unit operations, including reserve forces training facilities, equipment, and training programs, and understood the current status of Gangseo District’s reserve forces training.

Next, Mayor Kim visited the VR video simulation shooting range and personally met with reservists to check if there were any inconveniences.

Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “It has been two years since reserve forces training resumed due to COVID-19, and there are many difficulties, so I appreciate your hard work in undergoing training,” adding, “Above all, I hope you complete the training safely.”

After checking the difficulties faced by reservists, Mayor Kim visited the 213th Regiment again to deliver consolation money and encourage the efforts of military personnel dedicated to the nation.

Gangseo District has about 30,000 reserve forces personnel, including 24 female reservists. The Bakdal Science Reserve Forces Training Center, where reservists from Seoul’s Gangseo, Yangcheon, Guro, Geumcheon, Dongjak, and Yeongdeungpo districts train, conducts next-generation reserve forces training using virtual reality (VR).

On this day, Mayor Park toured the remodeled Mapo Art Center facilities completed last October and pointed out several issues such as unnecessary replacement of sound equipment, blocked views caused by the second-floor balcony railing, and loss of plaza function due to lobby expansion. He also urged the planning of diverse cultural performances beyond musicals to increase resident accessibility and enhance the utilization of the space as a local cultural venue.

Furthermore, Mayor Park said, “Without going to the site, it is impossible to properly understand the problems, and solutions tend to remain theoretical,” adding, “We must strengthen on-site administration by actively engaging in the field to create administration that residents can empathize with.”

Park Kang-soo, Mayor of Mapo District, operates the On-site Mayor’s Office by visiting livelihood sites on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month by dedicated bus to listen to difficulties and identify problems.
