Speculation on Imminent Launch of Apple Pay in Korea
Global Common Issues, Not Specific to Certain Countries
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] Apple has ignited speculation about the introduction of Apple Pay in Korea by updating the Apple Pay-related clauses in the 'Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions.' However, this is a global common update and not specific to Korea.
Apple Korea added Apple Pay-related content to the "Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions" through an update on the 12th. This is a global common update, not specific to Korea.
On the 12th, Apple added Apple Pay-related content to the domestic 'Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions' through an update.
The newly updated clause includes the statement, "If you add a payment method to Apple Wallet, Apple may charge the payment method you selected in Apple Wallet using Apple Pay." It also states, "You can link multiple payment methods to your Apple ID, and you agree that Apple may store and charge payment methods for transactions. The default payment method is displayed at the top of the payment methods settings page."
Apple Canada added Apple Pay-related content to the "Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions" in the update on the 12th.
As rumors about Apple Pay's entry into Korea have become more concrete recently, some interpreted this terms update as a sign that the support for Apple Pay service in Korea is approaching.
However, this has been confirmed to be untrue. This update is a common matter for all countries where Apple operates worldwide. It has been applied not only to existing Apple Pay-supported countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Hong Kong, and France but also to countries where the service is not supported, including Korea, Oman, Rwanda, Turkey, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The update date is also the same, September 12.
Meanwhile, in the market, it is known that Apple is in final contract negotiations to grant Hyundai Card an exclusive domestic usage right for Apple Pay for one year.
