Sancheong Keundeul and Obu-myeon Cheongwoo Association Win Green Gyeongnam Award Two Years in a Row Obu-myeon Cheongwoohoe Cherry Blossom Road Construction Awarded the Blue Gyeongnam Prize

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam announced on the 14th that the art community Keundeul and the Cheongwoohoe of Obu-myeon, Sancheong-gun were selected for the ‘22nd Green Gyeongnam Award’ presented by Gyeongnam Province.

Last year, Namsa Village, the first village designated as the most beautiful village in Korea, ‘Namsa Yedamchon,’ in Sancheong-gun, received the Green Gyeongnam Award. With this, Sancheong-gun has been selected for the Green Gyeongnam Award for two consecutive years.

The Green Gyeongnam Award is given by Gyeongnam Province to organizations or individuals in cities and counties who have made efforts and achieved results in cultivating a green Gyeongnam.

The award is presented in three categories, and this year in Sancheong-gun, the art community Keundeul received the award in the creation category, and the Cheongwoohoe of Obu-myeon received the award in the management category.

With this selection, the county will receive incentives for priority support of provincial funds for green space creation projects in 2024.

The art community Keundeul is a representative madanggeuk (traditional Korean outdoor play) troupe in Gyeongnam with a history of 38 years. Since 2019, they have created the Sancheong Madanggeuk Village in Sancheong-eup and live as a community.

Since the village was established, Keundeul has been steadily planting and cultivating flowers in the village. The village, transformed into a flower village, features a harmonious blend of cat wood carvings and paintings on small fields, showcasing the characteristics of an artist community village. Not only madanggeuk but also the gardens and garden ornaments attract visitors’ attention.

Lee Gyu-hee, the representative of Keundeul, said, “All the members love flowers and planted and cultivated them with the desire to beautifully decorate their living environment, so it is a great joy to receive the ‘Green Gyeongnam Award.’ We will work harder to create and maintain the village as a model community garden in Gyeongnam.”

The Cheongwoohoe of Obu-myeon planted cherry trees along the local road No. 1026 in Obu-myeon in 1996 and has been managing them to this day.

Founded in 1982, Cheongwoohoe is an organization that takes the lead in sharing for the local community, such as helping neighbors in need and providing scholarships. They were recognized for cultivating cherry trees over a long period and making them a local attraction.

Lee Seung-hwa, the county governor, said, “I thank everyone who has worked hard to create a green Gyeongnam and a green Sancheong. We will continue to strive to beautifully cultivate Sancheong together with those who create hidden treasures in the region.”
