[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Choi] Naver Webtoon announced on the 14th that the original sci-fi (SF) webtoon ‘Moon You’ by writer Jo Seok will have its first-ever theatrical screening of ‘4DX Moon You’ on the 12th of next month.
‘4DX Moon You’ is a ‘4DX webtoon’ created through collaboration between Naver Webtoon and CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of CJ CGV, incorporating various 4DX effects onto the screen.
The webtoon ‘Moon You’ is an SF comedy depicting the struggles of an astronaut left alone on the moon after an asteroid collision causes the extinction of humanity on Earth. It is a work by Jo Seok, famous for ‘The Sound of Your Heart’ and ‘Cho’s Territory,’ serialized on Naver Webtoon from June 2016 to September 2017 with a total of 68 episodes.
The original webtoon-based ‘4DX Moon You’ transfers the webtoon’s speech bubbles and frames directly onto the screen while adding motion graphics and camera movements to create dynamic visuals.
No Seung-yeon, Head of Global Intellectual Property (IP) Business at Naver Webtoon, said, “Moon You is an original SF webtoon set on the ‘moon,’ and as an IP that allows experimental attempts, it has received love calls from various domestic and international production companies. We expect that through the genre of ‘4DX webtoon,’ introduced for the first time in Korea, more people including original fans will have the opportunity to experience webtoons in a new way.”
Previously, the webtoon-based ‘Moon You (MOONYOU) - Dokhaeng Wolgu (獨行月球)’ released in China in July earned approximately 580.3 billion KRW in revenue and attracted 70.67 million viewers. It is highly likely to rank second in the 2022 Chinese box office. On the 10th, the webtoon-based animation ‘Moon You’ was first released on major online video streaming services (OTT) such as iQIYI and Bilibili.
