[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Oh Mi-seop, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council, stated that preparations must be made for the increase in dementia patients due to aging population.
On the 13th, during the 1st plenary session of the 306th regular meeting, Councilor Oh mentioned the necessity of establishing specialized dementia care facilities in response to the aging population and the rise in dementia patients through a 5-minute free speech.
He also requested that the construction of the public dementia-specialized complex care facility be carried out as originally planned.
The public dementia facility construction project, which began in 2018 as a differentiated welfare policy unique to Seo-gu, Gwangju, is undoubtedly the best policy in the social welfare sector.
It provides differentiated medical care benefits and serves as a representative regional project model of the national dementia responsibility system that can instill pride in Seo-gu residents.
Now entering its fifth year, the project faces sudden jeopardy of being halted due to changes in surrounding conditions such as increased construction material costs, extended construction periods, and operational issues.
In response, Councilor Oh proposed a new vision of "community-responsible dementia" in line with the national dementia responsibility system, which was fully implemented in September 2017.
He said, “Dementia is no longer just a problem for patients and their families but a social issue that the nation and local communities must share responsibility for,” and urged, “Relevant departments should actively strive to ensure that the public dementia-specialized complex care facility can successfully settle within the community.”
