[Asia Economy Reporter Bang Je-il] Amid controversy over an AI-generated painting winning first place at an art competition held in the United States, an Indian architect has presented a vision of future apartments through AI.

According to CNN on the 7th (local time), Indian architect and computer designer Manas Bhatia revealed a futuristic high-rise apartment bird's-eye view using image-generating AI.

Manas Bhatia envisions a future where residential skyscrapers covered with trees, plants, and birds serve as air purifiers.

He realized his ideas through delicate detailed images. The imaginative buildings he showcased are designed with nature-inspired curved forms. However, these designs are not solely the product of Bhatia’s imagination.

Bhatia previously started the 'AI x Future City' project using Midjourney, an AI video tool that won first place at an art competition in Colorado.

By inputting commands such as 'futuristic tower,' 'utopian technology,' 'coexistence,' and 'bioluminescent materials' into Midjourney, the AI generated a series of digital images.

Bhatia explained, "Each surreal piece can take up to 20 minutes to create," adding, "I revised the descriptions and edited or added commands nearly 100 times per project to get the desired results and refined the images using Photoshop."

He added, "I created images using AI, and during the process, the AI learned on its own. The trial-and-error process using Midjourney was enjoyable."

In another project called 'Coexistence Architecture,' Bhatia imagined a future where buildings are made from living materials. Using commands like 'giant' or 'hollow,' he created images of apartments named 'Ideal Future' embedded within trees.

He explained that these buildings were inspired by Hyperion, a 116-meter-tall redwood in California, the tallest living tree in the world.

Bhatia said, "The building's exterior walls were inspired by real nature, and the way the building regulates temperature was inspired by plant transpiration. If buildings can be made using natural materials and continuously grown, the building itself could be cycled through natural processes."

Meanwhile, Bhatia also shared his opinion on the controversial work by James M. Allen, who recently won an art exhibition.

Bhatia stated, "AI is just another tool. Art is infinitely interpretable, and artists can create art using any kind of tool. AI is accessible to everyone, but it cannot produce results as good as those by highly creative people."

He continued, "It can stimulate new ideas that produce products beyond the user's imagination and enrich the design process. In the future, AI will be able to generate 3D designs, and this feature will be integrated into the software architects use to model their creations."
