Seoul Yongsan Police Station announced on the 7th that they had sent Mr. A (41) to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office under custody on the 6th on charges including violation of the Special Act on Insurance Fraud Prevention. Mr. A was arrested and detained on the 29th of last month.
According to the police, from April last year to August this year, Mr. A deliberately collided with vehicles in Seoul and the Gyeonggi area to extort settlement money. Through about 51 traffic accidents, he received approximately 33 million won from drivers and insurance companies.
Last month, the police received reports of suspected insurance fraud traffic accidents from five victims and launched an investigation. On the 29th of last month, police discovered Mr. A committing insurance fraud in Sindang-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul, and arrested him. It is known that Mr. A spent all the insurance money extorted from intentional accidents on online gambling and entertainment expenses.
A police official stated, "After the suspect was caught and during the investigation, multiple additional traffic accidents were confirmed, and records were found showing settlement payments of about 100,000 to 200,000 won deposited from unspecified many people," adding, "We are continuing to investigate further crimes."
