[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Gi-jae, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, attended the ‘Chuseok Love and Sincerity-filled Lucky Bag Sharing Event’ held on the morning of the 7th at the auditorium of Sinjeong 1-dong Community Center.
Organized by the Yangcheon-gu Saemaeul Women's Association, this event was conducted by preparing Hangawi lucky bags containing songpyeon, hangwa, and ceremonial foods for 180 vulnerable households, including elderly living alone, grandparent-grandchild families, low-income families, and multicultural families, and delivering them by neighborhood.
Mayor Lee, who personally prepared the food to be placed in the lucky bags that day, said, “I sincerely thank the Yangcheon-gu Saemaeul Women's Association for organizing this lucky bag sharing event filled with sincerity and nutrition for our neighbors in need. I hope everyone enjoys delicious holiday food and has a hopeful Hangawi.”
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, visited Woori Market in Daerim-dong on the morning of the 7th ahead of the Chuseok holiday.
On this day, Mayor Choi toured various parts of the market, met with busy market merchants preparing for Chuseok, offered words of encouragement, and listened to difficulties caused by COVID-19 and the economic downturn, thus checking on the livelihood economy.
Mayor Choi Ho-kwon said, “I am glad to see the market regain vitality for the first holiday without social distancing in a long time. I hope residents prepare their ritual items frugally at nearby traditional markets and feel the generous spirit and warm affection.”
Kim Tae-woo, Mayor of Gangseo-gu, Seoul, visited Gyo-nam Somang House in Hwagok-dong and Gangseo Senior Welfare Center in Deungchon 3-dong on the 7th to offer holiday greetings and share kind words ahead of the national holiday Chuseok.
Opened in 1982 and celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Gyo-nam Somang House supports growth as a member of the local community through differentiated management and support tailored to levels, from those needing intensive care to disabled individuals capable of independent living.
Gangseo Senior Welfare Center is responsible for elderly welfare services by supporting seniors’ health management, job placement, and customized care projects.
Mayor Kim Tae-woo said, “We are working hard to accompany socially vulnerable groups by preparing practical measures for disabled people to become independent members of the community rather than mere recipients of support. I hope all marginalized groups, welfare facility workers, and volunteers have a safe and happy Hangawi.”
Moon Heon-il, Mayor of Guro-gu, visited Gocheok Neighborhood Market and Gocheok Alley Shopping District on the afternoon of the 7th.
Mayor Moon visited traditional markets in the area ahead of Chuseok to listen to voices from the field and encourage merchants struggling with rising prices and the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
On the 8th, a day before the Chuseok holiday, he plans to visit Guro Market, Namguro Market, and Garibong Market.
Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Seong-heon) announced that on the 7th, it delivered 600 Chuseok gift packages worth a total of 30 million won, sponsored by the Korean Salvation Army, to local youth facilities, child welfare facilities, group homes, multicultural family children, and out-of-school youth.
The gift packages contained items carefully prepared by the Salvation Army, including fresh apples, fresh pears, yakgwa (traditional honey cookies), cup rice, jangjorim (soy-braised beef), and scorched rice.
At the delivery ceremony held at the district office on the 6th, Mayor Lee Seong-heon expressed gratitude to the Salvation Army, saying, “I can picture the children happily receiving the gift packages,” and added, “I will work hard to make Seodaemun-gu a happy place for children.”
The Korean Salvation Army operates about 100 social welfare facilities nationwide, including comprehensive welfare centers, local children’s centers, and homeless welfare facilities. In Seodaemun-gu, it runs Hong Eun Comprehensive Social Welfare Center and Seodaemun Jeongdameun Food Market, continuously engaging in social contribution activities.
