[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The proactive measures taken by Dongdaemun District Mayor Ilhyung Lee in preparation for Typhoon Hinnamnor are drawing attention.
Starting from the early morning of the 4th, Mayor Lee toured the sites to inspect damage caused by Hinnamnor. On the 5th, he continued to show proactive efforts by checking on single-person households and others.
On this day, Mayor Lee conducted thorough inspections targeting flood-vulnerable households, disaster-vulnerable households living in semi-basement homes, and others to ensure that there would be no casualties from Typhoon Hinnamnor. Special attention was given to elderly people with mobility difficulties, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable single-person households.
The district has assigned one public official to 2-3 flood-vulnerable households, providing care services related to flood damage so that officials can monitor the condition of the residents and prepare for safety accidents when heavy rain is expected or occurs. Since the 22nd of last month, the district expanded this service. Previously, one official was assigned to care for 2-3 households, but now two or more officials and volunteers are assigned to focus on managing one flood-vulnerable household intensively. While expanding the care service, the district also identified additional disaster-vulnerable households living in semi-basements and selected them as care targets.
In response to the northward advance of Typhoon Hinnamnor, from the 5th, the district conducted focused inspections on a total of 76 care-target households related to flood damage through care officials and volunteers. They sent text messages, made guidance calls, and conducted visits to check current conditions and confirmed emergency contact networks to be used in case of urgent situations.
On the afternoon of the 5th, Mayor Ilhyung Lee personally visited two single elderly households (photo), thoroughly inspecting inside and outside the homes to check for any leaks and whether they could easily exit in an emergency, while carefully managing emergency contact networks. In particular, one elderly resident named Kim, who was visited that day, is elderly with a disability and lives alone in a semi-basement, so his condition was checked even more meticulously.
Mayor Lee plans to maintain a 1:1 partnership with the two elderly residents he visited that day and continue monitoring their living conditions. The 1:1 partnership is part of the Bodeumnuri project, a representative welfare program that Dongdaemun District has carried out for over 10 years to eliminate welfare blind spots. All district office employees, residents, and companies form 1:1 partnerships with vulnerable groups in the community to regularly check if they face any difficulties in daily life and connect them with necessary welfare services.
From the 5th, about 1,300 employees of Dongdaemun District Office are delivering Chuseok greetings via phone calls and visits to vulnerable groups in 14 neighborhoods with whom they have 1:1 partnerships, while also checking on typhoon-related situations.
Mayor Ilhyung Lee of Dongdaemun District said, “It pains me that the vulnerable single-person households have become even more isolated due to Typhoon Hinnamnor occurring just before Chuseok. Visiting the field today and meeting elderly people with mobility difficulties made me realize once again that emphasizing safety cannot be overstated. I will do my best to ensure a safe Dongdaemun District.”
