[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province issued an emergency response level 3 at 1 p.m. on the 5th in relation to Typhoon 'Hinnamnor.' This came five hours after issuing level 2 at 8 a.m. the same day.
Gyeonggi Province announced that it elevated the emergency level of the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to the highest level, level 3, at 1 p.m. on the 5th.
This is the first time in two years since Typhoon Maysak in September 2020 that the province has issued an emergency level 3.
The province explained that due to the possibility of large-scale damage across Gyeonggi Province caused by heavy rain and the typhoon, it decided to upgrade to level 3 after a situation assessment meeting to strengthen the preparedness system.
With the upgrade to level 3, the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters of Gyeonggi Province will manage the heavy rain situation with the Director of the Safety Management Office as the controller, and the First Deputy Governor will oversee overall management.
As of 1 p.m., 1,738 employees from the province and city/county offices have started emergency duty. The province is especially monitoring areas at risk of casualties and vulnerable roads prone to flooding, as well as inspecting facilities vulnerable to strong winds and drainage facilities.
Meanwhile, a heavy rain advisory was issued for all cities and counties in the province at 2 p.m. on the same day. Typhoon warnings are expected to be issued in Yangpyeong, Gwangju, Yeoju, Anseong, Icheon, Yongin, and Pyeongtaek by early morning on the 6th. A wind wave advisory is currently in effect for the entire central West Sea.
The concentrated rainfall period is from 12 p.m. on the 5th to 9 a.m. on the 6th. The expected rainfall amounts are 70 to 120 mm on the 5th and 40 to 150 mm on the 6th.
According to provincial data, from midnight on the 4th to 1 p.m. on the 5th, an average of 66.8 mm of rain fell in Gyeonggi Province. The area with the heaviest rainfall was Pocheon City, recording 125.0 mm, followed by Gapyeong County with 97.5 mm, Namyangju City with 94.5 mm, and Dongducheon City with 89.0 mm.
