[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will provide disaster relief funds totaling 27.5 billion KRW to residents affected by the heavy rains before Chuseok to help them quickly stabilize their lives.
Earlier, the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters completed the first damage survey for private facilities from the 18th to the 28th of last month and allocated 16.7 billion KRW in national funds to Gyeonggi Province.
Following the national fund allocation, the province conducted an additional damage survey from the 29th to the 31st of last month.
Based on this, the province plans to distribute the second round of disaster relief funds as quickly as possible. The provincial government’s share is 4.2 billion KRW, and the city and county governments’ share is 6.6 billion KRW.
The areas declared as special disaster zones on the 22nd of last month?Seongnam, Gwangju, Yangpyeong, Yeoju, Uiwang (Cheonggye-dong, Gocheon-dong), and Yongin (Dongcheon-dong)?will receive 70% support from the national treasury.
Cities and counties that are not designated as special disaster zones or priority areas (which do not meet the criteria for special disaster zone declaration but are eligible for national funding) can receive 50% national treasury support if damages exceed 30 million KRW.
Notably, this national fund allocation includes 2 million KRW per case to support small business owners affected by flooding.
Gyeonggi Province expects 3,795 people to benefit from this support.
Meanwhile, the rainfall from 0:00 on the 8th to 7:00 on the 17th of last month was recorded at an average of 428.9mm. This rain caused significant damage, including 5 deaths, 6,038 houses (21 completely destroyed, 35 half-destroyed, 5,982 flooded), 10 vessels, 109.17 hectares of farmland, and 3.96 hectares of vinyl greenhouses.
Compensation for human casualties includes up to 20 million KRW for death, 16 million KRW for completely destroyed houses, 8 million KRW for half-destroyed houses, and 2 million KRW for flooded houses.
Previously, Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon urged the prompt distribution of disaster relief funds to help residents affected by the heavy rains quickly return to their daily lives. So far, 1,479 cases amounting to 1.8 billion KRW have been pre-paid proactively in Gwangju, Ansan, Uijeongbu, Suwon, and Namyangju.
