Enemy → Household Faucet, 15 Water Quality Tests Conducted
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] The Ulsan City Waterworks Headquarters announced that it undergoes as many as 15 water quality inspection processes, including raw water and purified water, to produce and supply safer and cleaner tap water.
According to the Waterworks Headquarters, the water quality inspections conducted from raw water to household faucets include ▲raw water ▲purified water ▲each purification process ▲each tap water supply process ▲faucets ▲supply facilities (reservoirs, supply pipes) ▲algae and algae alert system-related ▲algal toxins ▲protozoa ▲viruses ▲radioactive substances inspections.
Additionally, they conduct ▲water quality inspections led by the Tap Water Evaluation Committee ▲free water quality inspections under the Tap Water Safety Confirmation System ▲water treatment agent analysis ▲supply system larva monitoring, among others.
Although the inspection frequency and content vary by item, thorough and meticulous pre-inspection measures are in place to produce and supply high-quality tap water, allowing citizens to drink tap water with confidence.
In particular, the Waterworks Headquarters inspects far more items than those required by the Ministry of Environment and regulations to ensure the safety of tap water for both raw and purified water.
They inspect a total of 119 items for raw water (47 regulatory items, 72 self-monitoring items) and 223 items for purified water (89 regulatory items, 134 self-monitoring items).
As of September, after inspecting 105 items for raw and purified water (with 119 items planned by December), the raw water from dams and purification plants was rated slightly good (Ⅱ) based on total organic carbon (TOC) standards, and 70 harmful substances related to human health protection were confirmed to be completely undetected.
For purified water, 130 items (223 items planned by December) were inspected, proving the safety of the tap water.
Larvae, which are a concern for occurrence and proliferation during summer, were not detected even once in Ulsan’s tap water (purified water, reservoirs, distribution network faucets, etc.).
During the Ministry of Environment’s special inspection of hygiene management at 485 purification plants nationwide from July 19 to August 8, no larvae such as midges were found at Ulsan’s purification plants.
Algal toxins and odor substances (geosmin, 2-MIB), which require special management and attention during summer along with larvae proliferation, were also not detected in Ulsan’s tap water.
For reference, Ulsan City’s algal toxin inspections include not only the Ministry of Environment’s monitoring item microcystin-LR but also four additional types (microcystin-YR, -RR, -LA, and anatoxin), all of which were undetected.
A Waterworks Headquarters official said, “Based on water quality inspection results, Ulsan’s tap water is much safer and cleaner than drinking water quality standards, so citizens can drink it with confidence.”
The Waterworks Headquarters has formed a “Tap Water Quality Complaint Rapid Response Team” consisting of five teams (two members per district/county), which immediately dispatches to the site upon water quality complaint reports to resolve issues through inspections.
They also operate the “Our Home Tap Water Safety Confirmation System” to alleviate vague distrust and confirm safety regarding tap water quality.
