[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Automotive battery company LG Energy Solution has started production at its first battery plant jointly established with General Motors (GM), major foreign media reported on the 31st (local time).

The joint venture Ultium Cells announced that more than 800 employees are employed at the first plant, the Warren plant located in Ohio, USA, and preparations are underway to expand production. This plant is the first of at least four plants planned by the joint venture in the United States. The batteries produced will be supplied to GM electric vehicles.

An LG Energy Solution official explained, "We are currently producing prototypes and preparing to establish a full-scale mass production system."

This production began about 2 years and 8 months after LG Chem and GM signed a contract to establish the joint venture in December 2019. Ultium Cells is also constructing the 2nd and 3rd plants in Tennessee and Michigan, respectively.

On the 29th, LG Energy Solution signed a contract to establish a battery joint venture plant with Japanese automaker Honda.
