Jeonnam Province Conducts On-site Inspection of the 'Gwangyang Bay Area Hydrogen Industry Convergence Platform' Construction

[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 31st that it inspected the site of the ‘Gwangyang Bay Area Hydrogen Industry Convergence Platform’ project, which is being promoted to realize carbon neutrality centered on Yeosu and Gwangyang ports and to lead the future hydrogen economy, and discussed collaboration directions with related organizations.

The province is fostering Yeosu-Gwangyang Port as a hydrogen logistics hub to achieve carbon neutrality through energy transition in the Gwangyang Bay area, where steel and petrochemical companies, which are high greenhouse gas emitters, are concentrated, and is developing the Gwangyang Bay area as a hydrogen hub with high hydrogen demand.

In particular, based on the excellent steel and petrochemical industrial environment of the Gwangyang Bay area, the project aims to create a full-cycle hydrogen industry ecosystem by promoting the ‘Gwangyang Bay Area Hydrogen Industry Convergence Platform’ construction project.

The main projects of the ‘Gwangyang Bay Area Hydrogen Industry Convergence Platform’ construction include ▲ establishment of an LNG hub terminal ▲ creation of a large-scale clean hydrogen production complex ▲ construction of a hydrogen port terminal ▲ establishment of shared hydrogen supply infrastructure ▲ development of a hydrogen city in Gwangyang City ▲ and creation of a clean hydrogen power generation complex.

During the site inspection, Jeonnam Province visited the LNG hub terminal storage tank construction site on Myodo Island in Yeosu, the long-term hydrogen industry projects such as hydrogen reduction steelmaking promoted by POSCO, and the POSCO LNG terminal site currently importing, storing, and operating LNG.

They then visited Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority and had in-depth discussions on collaboration system linkage plans, including the utilization of pipeline networks for the ‘hydrogen supply shared infrastructure’ construction project (50 km).

Kang Sang-gu, Director of the Energy Industry Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “The Gwangyang Bay Area Hydrogen Industry Convergence Platform construction project is a feasible large-scale project to realize carbon neutrality in the era of global energy transition, so we will devote all our efforts to promoting the project.”
