[Featured Stock] Woorinet, Years of Preparation for Ieum5G Blooming... Government and Samsung Also Find Goldmine in 'Digital Twin'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyungsoo] Woorinet, a company specializing in optical communication networks, is showing strong performance. The news that Samsung Electronics is participating in the domestic '5G Convergence Service Project' and expanding the provision of solutions for the 5G specialized network 'Eum5G' to public and private sectors appears to be influencing the stock price. The possibility of increased application of Eum5G-related technologies and business participation opportunities has grown.

As of 1:06 PM on the 31st, the stock is trading at 9,440 KRW, up 13.73%.

Samsung Electronics is collaborating with public and private institutions in five fields: energy, safety, water resource management, medical care, and medical education to provide 'Eum5G dedicated solutions.' Eum5G is a communication network that allows general companies, not mobile carriers, to directly build 5G networks by utilizing 5G frequencies. In South Korea, since last year, 4.7GHz and 28GHz have been allocated as dedicated frequencies for specialized networks, and preparations for commercial service are underway.

Samsung Electronics provides each demand institution with a consortium-based 'Eum5G dedicated solution,' including compact core, compact macro, and radio base stations supporting the dedicated specialized network frequencies of 4.7GHz and 28GHz. For example, Korea Electric Power Corporation plans to implement an intelligent power grid using Eum5G, building a digital twin virtual substation, utilizing autonomous robots for unmanned surveillance, and enhancing convenience and safety for workers through on-site monitoring with wearable cameras.

Digital twin refers to a technology that creates an identical twin of a real-world place or object in a virtual space (computer) to simulate possible real-world scenarios, predict outcomes, and verify results.

Lee Won-jae, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, highlighted 'digital twin' as a smart city technology to watch. At the '2022 World Smart City Expo,' he stated, "In smart cities, various terrains, buildings, public facilities, and many underground facilities can be realized through digital twins," adding, "Digital twins can be used in road and building construction and park development, and solutions for disasters caused by climate change can be found through prior demonstrations."

He also said, "Combining various data with digital twins can evolve into metaverse cities, and it can be used in autonomous driving and urban air mobility (UAM) sectors," and added, "The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is making efforts in this area."

The expansion of the Eum5G market is also drawing attention to Woorinet. Woorinet has completed securing the necessary technologies for entering the ‘Eum5G’ business, including the country’s first 3GPP Release 16, NRDC (New Radio Dual Connect), and Eum5G SA (4.72GHz + 28.9GHz) support for dedicated modules. The product quality has been recognized through KC certification. It is used in public and B2B sectors with free integration technology without wired or wireless constraints, and offers high stability and security through packet-optical dedicated lines.

In line with the expansion of the Eum5G market, Woorinet has made a strategic investment in DuduOne, which owns proprietary 5G core network technology and products, to expand its business scope into the solution field. Existing smart factory internet networks can be converted to Eum5G specialized networks. Through digital twin smart factory customized specialized millimeter-wave services, technologies such as ultra-high-speed, large-capacity data transmission without interruption compared to existing Wi-Fi, ultra-low data latency, and excellent security will be applied.

A Woorinet official said, "We have been preparing for years to enter the Eum5G-related business field, and we will do our best to secure growth momentum through this field," adding, "We will actively develop digital twin smart factory solutions to strengthen our Eum5G business capabilities."
