Ministry of Science and ICT Completes Frequency Allocation for CJ OliveNetworks Eum5G

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 30th that the allocation of I-eum 5G frequencies and the change of registration for the period telecommunications business applied for by CJ OliveNetworks have been completed. I-eum 5G is a 5G communication network that allows businesses wishing to provide 5th generation mobile communication (5G) convergence services on a specific area (land/building) basis to build and offer services using 5G frequencies. This allocation of frequencies and change of registration for CJ OliveNetworks marks the fifth case of entry into the I-eum 5G telecommunications business.

CJ OliveNetworks’ I-eum 5G will be operated to demonstrate media services such as real-time video editing and real-time immersive content, as well as intelligent logistics services including AI-based logistics robots and facial recognition security monitoring, aimed at enhancing the capabilities of CJ Group companies and partner firms.

CJ OliveNetworks applied for 600 MHz bandwidth in the 28 GHz band and 100 MHz bandwidth in the 4.7 GHz band. The Ministry of Science and ICT allocated the entire requested frequency bands after conducting radio interference analysis, considering CJ OliveNetworks’ plan to utilize large-scale traffic in media and logistics sectors.

With this allocation, CJ OliveNetworks plans to expand into various fields by securing differentiated competitiveness in media sectors such as real-time performance and video editing using I-eum 5G after demonstrating multiple items. Previously, there was inconvenience in delivering high-definition video data recorded on sets for movies and dramas for post-editing, but with the allocation of the 28 GHz band I-eum 5G frequency, the filming site and editing room are connected via 5G, enabling real-time video editing.

Additionally, the Ministry of Science and ICT reviewed the appropriateness of the user protection plan submitted by CJ OliveNetworks for providing I-eum 5G services, which was submitted as part of their business involving resale of existing internet telephony and international dedicated lines with exchange facilities. The ministry imposed the minimum necessary user protection measures and processed the change of registration to a period telecommunications business operator holding line facilities.
