[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] Comprehensive paper company Kkaekkeutan Nara has embarked on creating an innovative work environment to improve employee welfare and corporate culture.

Kkaekkeutan Nara announced on the 30th that it has completed the first phase of remodeling the management building (Disaster Prevention Center, R&D Center) and welfare center (employee cafeteria, lobby, lounge, shower room) at its Cheongju plant and is now fully operational. Since November last year, Kkaekkeutan Nara has been dedicated to remodeling work to enhance the work efficiency of employees at the Cheongju plant.

The remodeling of Kkaekkeutan Nara’s Cheongju plant focused on "improving employee welfare." The lobby and lounge located on the first floor of the welfare center were remodeled to create a pleasant environment with convenience store and caf? facilities, and the second floor of the welfare center (office space) was also renovated. To improve welfare not only for executives and employees but also for partner company staff, facilities such as shower rooms were upgraded to enhance user convenience.

In 2019, Kkaekkeutan Nara relocated its headquarters from Chungmuro to Hannam-dong to improve employee welfare and foster a younger corporate culture. A cafeteria was created at the office entrance, and partitions between departments were lowered to break down barriers, strengthening interdepartmental communication and enhancing employee welfare.

Kkaekkeutan Nara is also making efforts to improve communication and a horizontal organizational culture. In 2019, it newly applied the 'Agile organization system' to replace the existing functional and hierarchical organizational structures. The Agile organization system refers to a corporate culture that breaks down departmental boundaries and forms small teams as needed to carry out tasks.

In November last year, as part of organizational culture innovation led by the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z), the 'Junior Board' was launched to actively reflect the opinions of the younger generation. As a result of discussions at the recent third Junior Board meeting, ideas for improving the '3-step meeting process' were proposed.

In the first step, 'Before the meeting,' the purpose and roles of the meeting are notified in advance; in the second step, 'During the meeting,' the principle of 'one topic per meeting' is applied and the meeting is concluded within one hour. In the third step, 'After the meeting,' individual work action plans are derived by sharing the meeting minutes of the day. To establish an efficient meeting culture on an ongoing basis, Kkaekkeutan Nara posted '3-step meeting process' posters in each meeting room at its headquarters and Cheongju plant and installed test timers.

A Kkaekkeutan Nara official said, "We hope that the remodeling of the Cheongju plant and the improvement of the meeting culture will resolve past inconveniences and serve as an opportunity to enhance work efficiency," adding, "Going forward, Kkaekkeutan Nara will do its best to actively communicate among employees, improve welfare desired by employees, and create an efficient work environment."
