[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency (Chief Lee Sangryul) announced on the 29th that it will collaborate with the Jeju Autonomous Police Corps, Model Drivers Association, Green Mothers' Association, and other cooperative organizations to implement traffic safety measures for children on their way to and from school.
This traffic safety measure was prepared to prevent traffic accidents as children's activities increase with the full reopening of elementary schools and kindergartens.
The Jeju Police selected 51 elementary schools with high accident risks out of 124 elementary schools in the province, then divided responsibility areas with the Jeju Autonomous Police Corps. During school hours, traffic police will be deployed at major intersections and within protection zones on school routes to conduct traffic safety guidance and traffic control focused on smooth communication for children.
During dismissal hours, when many accidents occur in protection zones, patrol cars and police motorcycles will be intensively deployed to conduct focused crackdowns on traffic violations that threaten children's pedestrian safety.
In addition, in cooperation with administrative cities that have authority to enforce parking regulations, guidance and crackdowns on illegal parking within protection zones will be carried out to ensure children's safety.
Since the revised Road Traffic Act came into effect on the 12th of last month, imposing a mandatory stop at crosswalks without traffic signals within child protection zones, the Jeju Police will carry out promotional and educational activities to ensure early establishment of this rule.
They plan to expand traffic safety facilities by inspecting school routes, installing stop signs in front of crosswalks, raised crosswalks, and speed measurement signs.
Joint inspection teams will be formed with related organizations such as Jeju Provincial Office of Education, Jeju City and Seogwipo City, and Korea Transportation Safety Authority to conduct special inspections on violations of compliance by operators and drivers of children's school buses.
On-site crackdowns on violations of special protection obligations for children's school buses will also be conducted concurrently.
A Jeju Police official said, "To ensure the absolute safety of children and create a safer and more enjoyable route to and from school, we will build a dense social safety net at the provincial level by forming cooperative partnerships with local residents."
He added, "As the saying goes, children are like red traffic lights, easily exposed to traffic accident risks, so we ask for special attention and care for child protection with the mindset that they are our own children or grandchildren."
