Shinan-gun Launches Strong Human Rights Committee to Protect All Residents

[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] On the 23rd, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do appointed 11 members of the Sinan-gun Human Rights Committee.

The Sinan-gun Human Rights Committee was formed to protect human rights, consisting of ▲local resident representatives ▲human rights experts ▲county council members ▲human rights-related social organizations, and has begun activities to protect the human rights of Sinan residents.

Attorney Kim Su-a (former Director of Human Rights Policy at the Ministry of Justice) was appointed as the Chairperson of the Human Rights Committee. The newly appointed chairperson is an expert in the human rights field, having served as the Human Rights and Peace Cooperation Officer of Gwangju Metropolitan City and Director of Human Rights Policy at the Ministry of Justice.

Among the 22 cities and counties in Jeollanam-do, Sinan-gun is the only one without a police station, and through the activities of the Human Rights Committee, residents will now receive human rights protection.

The term of the Sinan-gun Human Rights Committee is two years, from August 23, 2022, to August 22, 2024. During the term, the committee will perform functions such as deliberation, consultation, and recommendation on matters related to the protection and promotion of human rights in Sinan-gun, as well as human rights issues such as human rights violations, and will play a role in enhancing external cooperation on human rights work.

The 1st Sinan-gun Human Rights Committee, a deliberative advisory body on major human rights policies, plans to listen to the diverse voices of vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, women, workers, and children, and strive to create an environment where all residents can have their human rights protected.

Kim Su-a, Chairperson of the Sinan-gun Human Rights Committee, said, “The most important thing is to create a human rights-friendly environment to prevent human rights violations, and expert consultation and gathering opinions from the county council are necessary. Human rights protection should also reflect the characteristics of island regions.”

Park Woo-ryang, Mayor of Sinan-gun, stated, “Human rights violations occurring at some workplaces in the area have caused harm even to innocent residents. However, now workplaces located in Sinan-gun, local residents, and public officials will receive human rights education, serving as an opportunity to realize the path of living together. Protecting human rights is more important than a hundred policies.” He added, “Human rights violations require careful observation from those around, and everyone must make efforts.”

Currently, Sinan-gun has enacted a strong “Ordinance on the Guarantee and Promotion of Human Rights” on December 31 of last year, and the Island Village Human Rights Center has been operating since June.
