[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul City is taking serious steps to eliminate single-use items at baseball stadiums.
On the 23rd, Seoul City announced that from the 24th until September 23, when the professional baseball regular season ends, a pilot project using reusable cups and containers will be conducted at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. The amount of waste generated at baseball stadiums is 2,203 tons annually, accounting for 35.7% of the total 6,176 tons of waste generated by all sports facilities, making it the highest waste-producing sports facility.
Accordingly, Seoul City signed a business agreement on the same day with LG Twins, Doosan Bears, Amoje Food, Itgreen, and Hyosung Chemical to promote the use of reusable containers at Jamsil Baseball Stadium for the creation of a zero-waste Seoul. The purpose is to reduce the use of single-use items inside the stadium and foster an eco-friendly cheering culture.
LG Twins and Doosan Bears, who use Jamsil Baseball Stadium as their home ground, will take the lead, and Amoje Food, the operator of food and beverage sales within the stadium, Itgreen, the reusable container operator, and Hyosung Chemical, the supplier of raw materials for recycled reusable containers, will actively cooperate.
The main contents of the agreement include ▲establishing a cooperative system to support consumers' use of reusable containers ▲promoting the use of reusable containers in food and beverage facilities within Jamsil Baseball Stadium ▲raising awareness and promoting the use of reusable containers.
Visitors can use the service at 40 stores inside Jamsil Baseball Stadium during 23 games until September 23, and used reusable containers can be returned to return bins placed throughout the stadium. There is no separate deposit.
Meanwhile, Itgreen, the reusable container operator participating in this agreement, will conduct online events at the stadium during the pilot project period. The plan is to provide various benefits to service users to offer a positive experience with reusable container use. The city plans to develop a business model to promote the use of reusable containers within sports facilities through this pilot project and expand it to all sports facilities in the future.
Yoo Yeon-sik, Head of Seoul City's Climate and Environment Headquarters, said, “Voluntary participation from everyone is very important to reduce the use of single-use items. This agreement will be a milestone for a project led by the private sector in collaboration with the city.” He added, “We ask for the citizens' great interest and participation in creating an eco-friendly cheering culture where watching baseball games and protecting the environment can be done simultaneously.”
