[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Gunchan] A man in his 40s who grabbed his teenage daughter's hair, shook her, and threw a table causing injury after she told him not to smoke inside the house was sentenced to a suspended prison term.

The Chuncheon District Court Wonju Branch Criminal Division 3 (Presiding Judge Shin Gyosik) announced on the 20th that A (47), who was tried on charges including violation of the Child Welfare Act, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year suspension.

He was also ordered to attend 40 hours of child abuse treatment lectures, perform 160 hours of community service, be restricted from employment at child-related institutions for 3 years, and be under probation for 2 years.

On April 25 of last year, around 2:30 a.m., at his home in Wonju, Gangwon Province, A kicked his daughter B (15) to the ground and grabbed her hair shaking it because she told him "Do not smoke inside the house." He was prosecuted for throwing a table at her head and hitting her with fists and feet.

Due to the assault, B suffered injuries including a concussion with a recovery period of 2 weeks.

Earlier that month, on the 10th at around 11:20 a.m., A was also charged with grabbing and shaking B's hair and hitting her head multiple times because she behaved rudely. He was additionally charged with hitting her thigh with a plastic toy case.

The court stated, "The defendant has multiple prior convictions including prison sentences and similar offenses, and considering the frequency, method, and results of each offense in this case, the nature and circumstances of the crimes are serious."

It added, "The sentence was determined considering that the defendant has mostly shown remorse for his wrongdoing and his health is not very good."
