[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] Amid the continued resurgence of COVID-19, the preliminary tally as of 9 PM on the 20th showed fewer new confirmed cases compared to a week ago.

According to Seoul and other local governments, from midnight to 9 PM on the day, a total of 107,568 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19.

This is 17,323 fewer than the tally at the same time the previous day (124,891) and 8,462 fewer than a week ago on the 13th (116,030).

This is the first time since June 18 (5,760 cases, 1,337 fewer than a week prior) that the number of new confirmed cases in a Saturday preliminary tally decreased compared to a week earlier.

Since the beginning of July, when new confirmed cases doubled (increased twofold compared to the previous week) marking the start of the summer resurgence, there have been almost no cases of a week-on-week decrease in new confirmed cases except when the number of diagnostic tests decreased due to weekdays or holidays.

The daily new confirmed cases as of midnight for the past week from the 14th to the day were 119,554 → 62,058 → 84,106 → 180,788 → 178,574 → 138,812 → 129,411.

The daily average was 127,615, which is a 4.7% increase compared to the previous week (July 7?13) at 121,845, showing a clear slowdown in the upward trend.
