[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] In the Chungcheongbuk-do region, heavy rain exceeding 70mm per hour caused continuous flood damage, with reports of flooding and landslides in various areas.


According to the Cheongju Meteorological Office on the 20th, due to the heavy rain that started the previous day, rainfall amounts were recorded as 140mm in Angseong-myeon, 137mm in Sancheok-myeon, 127mm in Eomjeong-myeon of Chungju City, 101mm in Geumseong-myeon of Jecheon City, and 91.5mm in Yeongchun-myeon of Danyang County.


In particular, Eomjeong experienced a maximum hourly rainfall of 70.5mm. At around 4:37 a.m. that day, a landslide occurred on the Jungang Expressway heading toward Busan in Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang County, injuring a taxi driver in his 60s and a passenger, who were transported to the hospital.


Flood damage also continued. At around 1:56 a.m. that day, water flooded a house in Sancheok-myeon, Chungju City, prompting the 119 fire brigade to respond and pump out the water. Flooding of houses and restaurants also continued in nearby Angseong-myeon and Sancheok-myeon.


In Gamgok-myeon, Eumseong, two roads were flooded at around 2 a.m. that day. Reports were also received of water filling shops and warehouses in the area. The fire authorities carried out 10 safety measures and 2 drainage support operations. Chungbuk Province and the relevant local governments are maintaining a response system, including surveillance activities focused on areas at risk of casualties.
