[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Dongwoo Lee] Han Gijeong, nominee for the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman, stated on the 19th, "I will boldly innovate unnecessary regulations for a free market economy."
On the morning of the same day, while heading to the Seoul Fair Trade Mediation Agency, Han said, "I feel a heavy responsibility as I have been nominated as the candidate for the Chairman of the Fair Trade Commission in these challenging economic times," adding, "If appointed, I will strive to establish a free and fair market economy order."
Han emphasized, "For a fair market economy, strict measures will be taken to resolve issues such as cheating or corruption," and added, "I will take measures to ensure that economically vulnerable groups such as small and medium-sized enterprises and consumers do not suffer due to lack of information."
He further stated, "I believe that restoring a free and fair market economy is necessary to achieve the dynamic innovation growth goal pursued by the new government," and added, "To promote market competition, regulations must be lifted and companies should be allowed to operate freely."
In response to concerns that his expertise in fair trade might be lacking due to his background as an insurance and finance expert, he said, "I am a legal scholar who has long studied corporate activities, markets, and consumer protection, and I have experience participating in research institutes and government agencies, so I believe I can contribute to revitalizing the market economy."
Han urged the internal staff of the FTC, saying, "In the new government that pursues fairness and common sense, the role of the FTC is more important than ever," and added, "The FTC must strive to ensure that the market economy, efficiency, and fairness are supported and that unnecessary regulations are eliminated."
Han graduated from Seoul National University Law School, earned a master's degree in public administration from Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Administration, and holds a Ph.D. in law from the University of Cambridge in the UK. He is a legal scholar specializing in insurance law and commercial law. He served as the president of the Korea Insurance Research Institute from 2016 to 2019.
The Presidential Office evaluated, "Han is a legal scholar who respects market-oriented economic principles and also possesses administrative expertise through his activities in research institutes and government committees," adding, "In research areas such as insurance contracts, he has represented the 'weaker party's position' and has actively contributed to society based on his outstanding sense of balance."
