[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Hankuk University of Foreign Studies announced on the 18th that it has signed a business agreement with Dobong-gu and the UNESCO Korea Committee to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The three organizations will work together to develop and operate a "jointly certified ESD course" by ▲ enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation and exchanging information ▲ mutual cooperation for support systems ▲ participation of experts and instructors from each organization ▲ supporting ESD projects and mutual cooperation.
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) helps learners of all ages acquire the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to address interconnected global challenges such as climate change, environmental issues, loss of biodiversity, poverty, and inequality. ESD 2030 is UNESCO's ESD implementation program following the UN Decade of ESD (2005-2014) and the International ESD Implementation Program (2015-2019).
Hankuk University of Foreign Studies adopted the "jointly certified ESD course development and operation" as an official curriculum starting from the first semester of the 2023 academic year. Dobong-gu, as a UN University Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development, emphasizes the importance of youth participation in sustainable development education.
Park Jung-woon, President of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, stated, "Education for Sustainable Development requires the interest and practice of all global citizens, not confined to regional boundaries or theory," adding, "In the process of collaborating with international organizations, governments, local governments, and communities, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies will take the lead in providing better education to youth and future generations, creating a virtuous cycle."
