[Seulssine] Brad Pitt's B-grade Sensibility Train Action in 'Bullet Train', a Thrilling Ride

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] In Tokyo, Japan, the notoriously unlucky killer Ladybug (played by Brad Pitt) boards a high-speed train bound for Kyoto and receives orders to retrieve a briefcase with a sticker on the handle. Once on the train, he obtains the briefcase more easily than expected. If he just gets off now, the mission is complete. However, due to his usual bad luck, he cannot relax.

Sure enough, killers from around the world block his way as he tries to get off the train. A showdown unfolds between Ladybug, who risks his life to protect the briefcase, and the duo killers Tangerine (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Lemon (played by Brian Tyree Henry), as well as Wolf (played by Bad Bunny) and the White Death (played by Michael Shannon).

Based on Kotaro Isaka's novel "Maria Beetle," the film is directed by David Leitch. The director’s signature style shines throughout, with humor that keeps the audience engaged despite the somewhat long running time. Fans of the director’s previous works will find it entertaining.

Set on a Japanese train, the killers’ action scenes unfold with thrilling speed. Chases, escapes, crashes, shootings, and stabbings follow one another without hesitation. The meticulously designed action sequences deliver a strong impact. This is a 'Bullet Train' that truly captures the rhythm of action.

The wildly intense hardcore gunfights and samurai-style action provide an Eastern charm that is likely to captivate a niche audience. However, this may divide domestic viewers. While it might seem exotic to Hollywood audiences, Korean viewers may perceive it as heavily influenced by Japanese style. Although based on an original work, how it will be received remains uncertain. Additionally, trying to fit the vast source material into about two hours results in a somewhat scattered narrative.

'Bullet Train' is a film where Brad Pitt’s flexible acting is very impressive. He skillfully navigates between action and comedy, leading the story with a relaxed yet dynamic performance until the end. The film could be described as one where you go to see Brad Pitt but end up being overshadowed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, whose presence is also striking. Restricted to viewers aged 18 and over. Running time 126 minutes. Opens August 24.
