Chillyang-myeon Myeongju Stream Maintenance Project Should Be Included in Jeonnam Province's 5-Year Plan
[Gangjin=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-su] The Gangjin County Council in Jeollanam-do conducted an urgent inspection of disaster recovery projects in habitual flood-prone areas over two days starting from the 10th.
Chairperson Kim Bomi of the Gangjin County Council and the council leadership, along with Cha Young-su, Chairperson of the Operations Committee of the Jeollanam-do Provincial Council, Assemblyman Kim Ju-ung, officials from Jeollanam-do and Gangjin County, and local residents, conducted an urgent inspection of local rivers and habitual flood-prone areas within the jurisdiction.
The on-site inspection was carried out in response to the continuous heavy rains in the central region causing successive damages. The purpose was to check the status of disaster recovery projects and flood-prone areas to ensure safety management and prevent loss of life and property damage.
The Daegucheon River in Gangjin County is undergoing an improvement and restoration project with a budget of 10.857 billion KRW, which started in May this year and is scheduled for completion in November 2024. The Geumgangcheon River, located from Wolhari in Seongjeon-myeon, Gangjin County to Yeongjeon-ri in Jangheung-eup, is undergoing a project with a total budget of 43.8 billion KRW to install weirs, drainage gates, and five bridges along an 8.5 km section. Additionally, the Chillyangcheon River is currently in the design phase for a project worth 39.5 billion KRW to reinforce embankments and install bridges along a 4.8 km section.
Chairperson Kim Bomi stated, “To minimize damage from sudden heavy rains, prevention is the best measure. Therefore, the executive branch should actively respond by thoroughly managing facilities and conducting safety inspections to ensure that residents do not suffer damage.” She added, “The Gangjin County Council will also actively work through organic exchanges with the provincial council to ensure that the Chillyang Myeongjucheon maintenance project is prioritized in the Gangjin County local river maintenance plan.”
Meanwhile, in July last year, heavy rains caused the collapse of 2.8 km of embankments along Daegucheon and Myeongjucheon Rivers, resulting in damages amounting to 1.286 billion KRW. The county is continuously requesting disaster safety special grants from Jeollanam-do and central government agencies to reinforce earthen embankments and facilities excluded from the ongoing Daegucheon restoration project. For flood damage prevention in the habitual flood-prone Sachojigu area of Sinjeon-myeon, the county has also proposed the installation of two drainage pump stations and drainage channels.
