[Asia Economy reporters Hyunju Lee and Boryeong Geum] The emergency committee system of the People Power Party is expected to be maintained for at least four months. Amid conflicting opinions between those who want to hold the party convention immediately after the national audit and those next party leadership candidates who argue that the emergency committee system should continue until next year, some newly elected emergency committee members are leaning toward holding the convention right after the regular National Assembly session. The emergency committee plans to finalize its stance on the party convention schedule as soon as possible.

Emergency committee member Jeon Joo-hye said in a phone interview with Asia Economy on the 17th, "Holding the party convention in September or October seems difficult under the current circumstances," adding, "We need to observe the situation and consider an appropriate time after the turmoil has stabilized." However, she relatively emphasized the need to hold the convention before the end of this year to swiftly resolve the emergency situation. Jeon said, "Electing the party leader quickly is to fill the vacuum," and added, "I think the convention should be held within the year."

Earlier, emergency committee chairman Joo Ho-young stated regarding the operation period of the emergency committee and the timing of the party convention, "It would be better to resolve the emergency situation as soon as possible," but also noted, "After hearing opinions inside and outside the party, there was an overwhelmingly strong consensus that holding the convention after the regular National Assembly session would be better."

It appears that a consensus has formed among some emergency committee members to apply the emergency system for the shortest possible period while avoiding holding the convention during the regular National Assembly session. Accordingly, holding the party convention in December after the regular National Assembly session, without extending into next year, is becoming more likely.

The emergency committee members expressed their intention to focus on party stability and the recovery of the president’s approval rating. Emergency committee member Jeong Yang-seok said in a phone interview that day, "The ruling party’s emergency committee cannot just resolve internal issues and then elect the party leader," adding, "We believe we have a major task to stabilize the overall state affairs, such as recovering the president’s approval rating."

Emergency committee member Choi Jae-min also said, "There must have been expectations for the new government, but it seems we have shown a chaotic situation, for which I apologize," adding, "Through the emergency committee, we will quickly stabilize the party and show a united front to alleviate the concerns and worries of the 2030 party members."

However, former party leader Lee Jun-seok is scheduled to appear in court at the Seoul Southern District Court in the afternoon for a hearing on his injunction request to suspend the emergency committee’s authority. The result is expected as early as that day, drawing attention to its potential impact on the emergency committee’s activities.
